Vermont Legislature overrides gubernatorial veto of gay marriage

It has been a while since I posted – I am deep in the process of moving – but I need to spend a few minutes expressing my joy at the Vermont legislative process working for the good of humanity. This morning, April 7, 2009 the Vermont Senate voted 23-5, the House 100-49 to override Gov. Douglas’ veto of the Same-Sex Marriage. The House vote narrowly overrides, because a two-thirds majority is required to override. Vermont becomes the fourth US state to legalize gay marriage, and only the first to do so via legislative action, not via the courts. I am proud to be a Vermonter no matter what happens, but this really makes it peachy.
